What Is Overmolding?
Overmolding is a unique injection molding
process that creating a single part using a combination of two or more plastic
or elastomer materials. During the plastic overmolding process, the base layer
part is molded first, then the additional plastic layers are molded over and
around the original part.
Overmold VS. 2 shot mold, what are their features?
1. Overmold (secondary molding):
The two plastic materials are not necessarily injected on the same injection
molding machine, but are molded in two times with two different in injection
molding machine.
Generally, this molding process is usually completed by 2
sets of molds, without the need for a special two-color injection molding
machine. The mold structure is the same as one shot injection mold. It is
mainly controlled by adjusting the flow rate of the injection parameters to combination
of the materials.
Overmold is main hard plastic material over soft material,
the most common soft material like Synthetic Rubber,TPU,TPR ect, the hard
material is ABS、PC、PP ect.
2. 2 shot mold in which two plastic materials are
injected on the same injection molding machine and molded in two times, but the
product is only released once.
Generally, this molding process is also called
double-material injection molding, which is usually completed by a set of molds
and requires a special two-color injection molding machine. The two-color mold
can combine two resins and colors with different characteristics into a single
two-color product, which can reduce the assembly and post-processing of the
molded product and save the cost of melting and printing, increase the
beautiful visual effect of the product, and improve the grade and added value
of the product.
Two-color injection molding products have high quality
stability which is easy control of product deformation with short molding cycle
and high output. 7% lower loss than
overmolding, and 20%-30% lower product manufacturing cost than overmolding.
